History of The Williams Home, Inc.

Independent Living Community for Ladies

James Luther Williams

The Williams Home, Inc. was founded in 1941 by James Luther Williams. He was the Secretary/Treasurer of Lynchburg Coca-Cola Bottling Works, Inc. for 25 years. Not only did Mr. Williams work for the company, he wisely invested in Coca-Cola. Mr. Williams died in 1938 at the age of 67. In his Last Will & Testament, Mr. Williams directed that his executor shall promptly after his death, procure a corporation known today as The Williams Home, Inc., a non-profit home for women 55 years of age and older.

The land where The Home is built was purchased in 1944. Due to WWII, the building was not completed until 1950. The Home opened its doors in March 1950 to 11 Residents.

When Mr. Williams left the bulk of his estate for the establishment of a home, he could not have foreseen that his plan was unique among the many types of retirement residences that would later emerge. He only knew that he dreamed of a home where women could live in dignity, comfort and freedom from the cares of everyday responsibilities.

The Williams Home, Inc. of today has more than lived up to that dream and stands alone in the lifestyle enjoyed by the women who live here.
